Welcome to Meknes “The Ismailite Capital of Morocco”

Vor ein paar Tagen war ich das erste Mal in Meknès und habe mich in die prachtvolle Stadt und deren Geschichte verliebt! Gerne bringe ich Dir die Stadt und seine Umgebung ein wenig näher..   Meknès ist eine Stadt im nördlichen Marokko mit rund 600.000 Einwohnern. Sie liegt in der Region Fès-Meknès am Fuße des Mittleren Atlasgebirges. Ihr Name leitet sich vom Berberstamm der Miknasa ab, der den Ort ursprünglich besiedelte. Die gesamte Altstadt von Meknès wurde von der UNESCO im Jahr 1996 in ihre Liste des Weltkulturerbesaufgenommen. Die Stadt liegt etwa 550 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel in einer fruchtbaren Ebene zwischen dem Zerhoun-Massiv im Norden und dem Mittleren Atlas im Süden. Die Stadt Fès ist etwa 60 km (Fahrtstrecke) in nordöstlicher Richtung entfernt, die marokkanische Hauptstadt Rabat befindet sich etwa 152 km westlich. Mitten durch die Stadt verläuft das Wadi Bou Fekrane. Die Lage der Stadt in einem der landwirtschaftlich ertragreichsten Gebiete Marokkos macht die Stadt zu einem wichtigen Umschlagplatz für landwirtschaftliche Produkte (Getreide, Obst und Gemüse) und zu einem regionalen Zentrum für Handel und Handwerk. Die Nationale Landwirtschaftsschule Marokkos hat hier ihren Sitz. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten sind auch mittelständische Industrieunternehmen (Zementherstellung, Metallverarbeitung etc.) entstanden. Ursprünglich lebte in der Gegend der Berberstamm der Meknassa, der im 9. oder 10. Jahrhundert aus dem heutigen Tunesien einwanderte. Doch durch die Aktivitäten Moulay Ismails und später der Franzosen kamen auch viele arabisch-stämmige Bewohner hinzu. Seit den 1970er Jahren haben sich erneut viele Berberfamilien aus allen Teilen Marokkos hier angesiedelt. Man spricht heute generell Marokkanisch-Arabisch.

Bauten während der Herrschaft von Moulay Ismail

Der wirtschaftliche Wohlstand des Alawidenreichs ermöglichte eine umfangreiche Bautätigkeit. Neben der Befestigung von Städten und der Verlagerung der Hauptstadt von Fès nach Meknès ließ er dort eine Palastanlage von gigantischen Ausmaßen errichten. Leute die diesen Palast gesehen haben, beschreiben die Anlage als größer als die von Versailles. Die Arbeitskräfte für den Bau der Palastanlage stellten tausende von weißen Sklaven aus allen Teilen Europas und Nordamerikas, die unter entsetzlichen Bedingungen schuften mussten. Die hohen Ausfälle wurden durch neue Raubzüge der Korsaren aus Salé ergänzt. Moulai Ismails Erfahrungshintergrund und Charakter zeigen sich auch im Bau zahlreicher über das Land verteilter Festungen (Kasbahs) – am bekanntesten sind die Kasbahs von Settat und von Boulaouane. Die Palastanlage Mulai Ismails wurde im Jahr 1755 beim Erdbeben von Lissabon zerstört. Sein Mausoleum sowie Teile seiner imperialen Architektur, darunter die Stadt- und Palastmauern mit dem Tor Bab Mansour oder die Speicherbauten und Stallungen des Heri es-Souani, sind jedoch bis heute erhalten geblieben. Zeitgenossen behaupten, dass Moulay Ismail mit 500 Frauen 888 Kinder gezeugt haben soll!

Sehenswürdigkeiten

Die Stadt teilt sich in zwei Hälften, die Medina im Westen und die unter französischer Herrschaft entstandene Ville nouvelle im Osten. Die natürliche Grenze zwischen beiden Stadtteilen bildet der Oued Bou Sekrane. An der Place el Hedim, dem weiten Platz vor dem berühmten Stadttor Bab Mansour, befindet sich ein überdachter Markt für Lebensmittel. Die Souks von Meknès gehören zu den schönsten und ursprünglichsten des Landes.
Prachtvoll ist auch das Mausoleum von Moulay Ismail mit angeschlossener Moschee, das von Mohammed V. restauriert wurde. Den weißen Sarkophag flankieren überraschenderweise zwei barocke Standuhren, die in dem orientalischen Dekor fremdartig anmuten. Sie waren ein Geschenk des französischen „Sonnenkönigs“ Ludwig XIV. an Moulay Ismail.

Auch die anderen Stadttore aus der Zeit Moulay Ismails (Bab Berdayyin, Bab Khemis u. a.) gehören zu den imposantesten Anlagen ihrer Art in Marokko.

Im Februar 2010 stürzten nach tagelangen Regenfällen das Minarett und Teile des Daches der unter Sultan Moulay Ismail errichteten Bab-Berdieyenne-Moschee ein. Der vom König versprochene Wiederaufbau lässt noch auf sich warten.[2] Im Westen außerhalb der Altstadt liegt am Eingang eines großen Friedhofs das verehrte Mausoleum (Qubba) des Sidi Mohammed ben Aïssâ, des Gründers der volksislamischen Aissaoua-Bruderschaft.

Speicherbauten und Stallungen heri es-souani

Die riesigen Speicherbauten und Stallungen des Heri es-Souani sind ebenfalls sehenswert.

Stadt Volubilis

Ausflüge zu den Ruinen der etwa 25 km nördlich gelegenen römischen Stadt Volubilis und zum unmittelbar daneben liegenden Pilgerort Moulay Idriss sind empfehlenswert.
